The Hudson Institute/The Chronicle of Philanthropy Panel Discussion

Is Philanthropy Going to the Dogs? (September 5, 2008)

Leona Helmsley left the bulk of her $8 billion dollar estate to the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust with instructions that the entire trust was to be used for the care and welfare of dogs. This move has caused controversy in legal and philanthropic circles (see EoD News Archive for op-ed pieces). While the discussion can be interestingly framed in several ways, the bottom line comes down to whether or not the United States’ legal system recognizes an individual’s right to determine the final distribution of his/her assets.

At a recent event co-sponsored by the Hudson Institute’s Bradley Center for Philanthropy and Civic Renewal and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, a panel consisting of Professor Ray D. Madoff, Professor Leslie Lenkowsky, Georgetown University’s Pablo Eisenbert and Judge Robert Bork discussed “the fundamental questions Helmsley’s bequest raises about donor intent, social justice, and the public interest.” The Chronicle’s Stacy Palmer moderated the discussion.

Russell Verney

The Lynn Woolley Show (October 31, 2007)

Texas probate courts are increasingly becoming known as government venues in which citizens are additionally subjected to an involuntary redistribution of their assets – and don’t think this just affects the wealthy! Media accounts document the appearance of patronage systems, a lack of compliance with accountability measures and general disregard for the property rights of the taxpayers who fund these very courts. Lynn Woolley discusses this corruption with Russell Verney, former campaign manager for Ross Perot and Founding Chairman of the Reform Party. Russell Verney conducted a review of the Texas Probate Court System while he was the Southwestern Regional Director of Judicial Watch.

Wendy Murphy

The Lynn Woolley Show (September 14, 2007)

Wendy Murphy, author of And Justice for Some: An Expose´ of the Lawyers and Judges Who Let Dangerous Criminals Go Free, is a former prosecutor who became a victim’s rights advocate, fighting for innocent people who suffer when lawyers and judges put all their focus on the rights of criminals. In his foreward to Murphy’s book, Bill O’Reilly writes “The first step toward any reform is an exposition of the corruption. This book does that about as well as it can be done. It gets under the legal mumbo jumbo and offers you, the reader, strategies to avoid getting your head kicked in if, God forbid, you wind up in a courtroom. It offers a challenge to the powerful in America: Reform our legal system or admit it’s a farce.” Hear Wendy Murphy discuss some of the atrocities associated with our legal system and committed in the name of “justice.”

Robin C. Westmiller

The Lynn Woolley Show (August 29, 2007)

Robin C. Westmiller, J.D., president of the National Association to Stop Guardian Abuse and author of Blood Tastes Lousy with Scotch, discusses how Involuntary Redistribution of Assets occurs more often than people might think. Unscrupulous attorneys and other “trusted” family circle members – IRA practitioners – use the age and/or incapacitation of an individual to hijack money and to deny final wishes regarding the distribution of hard-earned assets. As the numbers of these cases increase, hear how families are fighting back in hopes of creating awareness and influencing public policy regarding this important issue.

Horace Cooper

The Lynn Woolley Show (August 21, 2007)

Does a will really mean anything regarding the final disposition of your assets? Frighteningly, this is becoming a legitimate legal question. The Anna Nicole Smith case is usually thought of as sensational celebrity fodder, but realistically, if lawyers are at all successful in extracting money on her behalf from the Marshall family, the implications could affect every American who has assets and the expectation that final distribution of those assets will be as per their wishes. Writer and legal commentator Horace Cooper and Americans for Prosperity Texas Director Peggy Venable discuss this serious issue.

Arthur C. Brooks

The Lynn Woolley Show (August 7, 2007)

In his new City Journal article, “What Really Buys Happiness?“, Arthur C. Brooks challenges the alleged connection between inequality and unhappiness. While there are always those who believe happiness is derived from voluntary or involuntary “redistribution” of other folks’ resources, opportunity for advancement and economic mobility are the factors that motivate honest and healthier individuals to a state of happiness.

Edward Snook

The Lynn Woolley Show (July 2, 2007)

Having spent the last 20 years researching cases of false and malicious charges, Edward Snook, Senior Editor and Investigator of the US~Observer maintains if the “justice system” can’t produce numbers, then obviously there is no need for as large a “justice system.” Do those in control of the “system” work to ensure that a possible loss of defendants does not occur? Edward and talk show host Lynn Woolley discuss this thought-provoking concept.

Coach Dave Daubenmire

The Lynn Woolley Show (February 7, 2007)

Coach Dave Daubenmire, founder and President of Pass the Salt Ministries, joins talk show host Lynn Woolley to discuss if many problems in America are actually caused by lawyers. In his column, How About Free Legal Insurance?, Coach Daubenmire asks if we are being held hostage by a “nobility” that resembles a Mafia as lawyers regularly make, interpret, litigate, circumvent and change laws?
