Texas financial health – a mixed bag

Some folks think government’s spending spree never has to end. And some folks just don’t think at all. Nonetheless, our latest drum-beating on the need for fiscal vigilance.

Though problem areas bear watching, Texas’ financial health comes in at #19 among U.S. states according to a new Ranking the States by Fiscal Condition study from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

Over time, people often face new health concerns and states are no different. The study notes how a state’s fiscal health is best maintained when governments are vigilant with regard to policy decision consequences – both in the short- and long-term.

With Medicaid spending and ever-increasing long-term obligations for pensions and health care benefits, mounting pressures make an understanding of any state’s current financial status all the more important.
