Franklin Center launches Watchdog Wire

As an inscription on the Nebraska State Capital states, “The Salvation of the State is watchfulness in the citizen.” It is with this quote in mind that the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity is launching a new site to help citizens hold their local and state governments accountable. The site will be a place for citizen journalists and information activists to connect with like-minded citizens in their own regions and across the nation. Watchdog Wire will serve as a platform where they can post original content covering the issues that all too often are ignored by the establishment media.

The Franklin Center believes that reporting, observing and upholding government accountability is essential to maintaining democracy. Since nearly the founding of America, the driving force behind our country’s free and democratic society has been an informed and engaged citizenry. Today, that force is at risk of being destroyed. Journalists everywhere are losing their jobs, hard-hitting investigative journalism is quickly becoming a career of the past, and public officials are not being held responsible for their actions that affect hardworking taxpayers.

These changes in the journalism industry allow great opportunity for everyday Americans to find their voice and fill the information gap in our society. At no other time in history has one person been able to reach such a vast audience in such a short amount of time. With social media and good reporting, citizens can take journalism into their own hands and become the watchdogs of government on the local, state and federal levels.
