Bonnie Sue Lawson, the former public administrator who served as guardian for mentally ill or disabled adults, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for embezzling funds from her clients’ accounts. (Click here for background.)
Lawson’s attorney argued for sentencing other than prison citing, per news reports, her “exemplary life” in the community and how she “has suffered significantly in her reputation and standing in the community.” Lawson perhaps put forth the guise of respectability, but how sad a statement if stealing from disabled people qualifies one as the best a community has to offer.
The article also states that because this is a federal sentence, Lawson is likely to actually serve the majority of the sentence.
On this tax day, EstateofDenial.com proclaims that funding the incarceration of Bonnie Sue Lawson is one use of taxpayer funds that we don’t mind. Perhaps this sentence will make stealing from the dead and disabled/incapacitated less appealing for others.
